SHURI + THE MASONS, BLKOUT WALLS FESTIVAL
DETROIT, MI | 2021

Detroit hosted their inaugural week-long BLKOUT Walls Festival in the city’s North End neighborhood. JY Originals was a “drop-in” artist during the second half of the festival. She completed an impromptu design and mural in just 2.5 days on the face of a historical mason lodge built in 1945. Her design was created to reflect the building owner’s love for a wall-paper-like repetitive floral pattern, but in a more geometric style featuring Young’s tribal symbols. Colorfully blended doors and panels were added as a signature touch to celebrate possibilities of opening new metaphorical doors.

The title is inspired by the building origins and the Wakanda character Shuri, Black Panther’s younger warrior sister.
