BE OPEN TO… | 2020

Janel Young was one of 18 Black artists selected by the USTA to create an art installation transforming the front-row seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the 2020 US Open. The original art exhibit was part of the launch of the USTA's Be Open initiative + represents a bold commitment to advance inclusivity + diversity through tennis. This piece sheds light on a broken power system in America, which is represented by a cracked jar in the background. It’s time for the world to make room + be open to what is shown inside the solid jar in the forefront.

Watch the time-lapse video of the canvas creation.
